Mirror 778 Sandy River Gorge

Mirror 778_Sandy River Gorge, Oregon

The Mirror Project was originally installed in the public spaces of the Comfort Inn Columbia Gorge Gateway in October, 2012.   It’s been a great year (how many artists get the opportunity to glance up at the video array while at the day job and see someone standing engrossed in a hall in front of one of their pieces?), and response to the Project has been overwhelmingly on the continuum between positive and delighted.

Halloween evening will be celebrating the renewal of the Installation, and everyone is (yes you are) invited. There will be new Mirrors on the walls, a Treasure Hunt through the halls in search of the critters in the middles, plus Mindy’s great hot cider, the popcorn machine, caramel for the apples, nuts & bolts, and a general atmosphere of good cheer.  No schmoozing required – if you want to just grab your Treasure Hunt cards and wander off in search of, with a cup of mulled cider in your hand, that’s the sort of gathering it is.

Everyone attending will be entered in the drawings for hotel stays, Mirror Project edition prints, and artist-designed Mirror Project earrings.  The drawings are at 8:00p and you don’t need to be present to win, just to have appeared at some point in the evening.

If you’re taking the kids out trick-or-treating, stop by before or after – we’ll help fill their bags and have a Treasure Hunt game for them, too!

This is entirely cool… Gorge Guide now has an app so you have Gorge Guide to go, even when you left your copy at home! I looked over Steph’s shoulder today when she downloaded it and it’s a great app.

Gorge Guide2

So hie to the App Store or Google play and enjoy thoroughly… this is a great publication, and a valuable addition.

* You’ll notice I said “Gorge Guide On Your Phone”, not “Gorge Guide On My Phone”.  Windows version not available at this time, so I’ll just peer over the shoulder of all you cool people with iPhones and Android. : )

And… GO, FISH!

run, Sandy River, smelt, Troutdale

The smelt are running in the Sandy!!!  If your response is yeah, yeah, there are fish in, of all places, the river and so…?, then it’s likely that you didn’t grow up around here forever ago like I did.  When I was a kid [not quite forever ago, but slightly back in the mists] the freezer was always full of smelt.

I hated them.  Tiny fish so you just eat the bones and I just can’t quite eat fish bones, BUT, boy was it a good day at the river to go dip them.  And Dad and Mom liked them.  I think.  Although they also claimed to like the asparagus pie debacle, so…

smelt_oregonlive

And then they quit running.  The last big run was in 1980 (I’m taking that from the City Of Troutdale site as in 1980 I wasn’t thinking about much beyond who was playing at The Last Hurrah that night, so I didn’t actually notice).  There were small runs in 2001 and 2003, but it’s been ten years since they were back in the river, and words like massive and enormous are being used to describe this run.

There won’t be any dipping this year as they were placed on the endangered list in 2010, so, while there’s some discussion about whether their absence was just part of an existing cycle we don’t have enough perspective to see, it’s illegal to possess them at this time (fishermen, that includes picking up a dead one on the shore for bait).

Therefore, I would suggest you get to the Troutdale Bridge, or the beach by Lewis & Clark or Glenn Otto, and witness a bit of this massive!, enormous! run of millions of fish for yourself.  That’d be where I’m heading today.

Some faces you just can’t argue with.

Gun Dog 1

Bernie

Bernie was featured, double page, as the leading pup in Gun Dog’s spring 2013 puppy edition of the magazine!

Gun Dog 3

There are other cute pups in there, but since Bernie is our local celebrity, and you can never have enough of cute celebrity pups, here’s more Bernie…

You will note that Max appears in the gallery.  That’s because every good pup needs a good old (not so old, but six is a grownup) dog to teach him the ropes.

Bernie and Max share their Troutdale home with Mindy and Noah (anyone with dogs knows why I said it like that).  And, because Bernie would never have made the show without Mindy’s good eye and camera, here’s a sampling of her work (and a glimpse of her buried in camo).  Mindy is working at the Comfort Inn Columbia Gorge Gateway and going back to school in the fall to further hone her photographic talents.

It Ain’t ALL Cold and Wind and Wet!

First and foremost, I have been absolutely utterly terrifically negligent in getting around to the fun stuff… please accept my abject apologies for leaving a gaping hole here between pre-Christmas and post-New Years : ). I hope you and 2013 are off on the right foot.

Just found this on my camera from last week at the Delta behind the hotel, and was reminded that (Oregon being Oregon) even in the middle of a stretch of gray, a sweet spot will appear.

…which seems like as good a thought as any for the first post of a new year and so I’ll hush right there.

We were delighted to have members of Going Second in the house while they were in our area on the Music Makes Music Tour.  They called us to see if we would be willing and able to donate rooms for the team while they worked with four middle schools.  Always happy to help a great program that helps kids.

MUSIC MAKES MUSIC

Borrowed From A Friend…

fall, hike, hotel, installation, leaves, Sandy River trail, The Mirror Project, walk

I borrowed this post from The Mirror Project page, because we wound up with a couple spots on the walls needing a sparkle after we installed the new art in the public spaces last week (math not being my very best thing) (don’t tell Jatin, I think he believed I could add before he handed me his hotel to run), and Mirror 539 was one of the eight additions delivered today.

I had to have Steph hold the print up and then back off ten steps to tell if it was upside-right or not, because, frankly, at 16×24 size on top of my desk,

it was just a bunch of leaves.

It’s not.  Can’t wait to see this one framed and hanging. : )

—————————–

Mirror 539 reminded me of how elusive / changeable / fickle the beings in the middle of The Mirror Project images can be. With the caveat that you are undoubtedly not going to see the same as I do, watch this…

I see a princess (lonnnng curly locks, slight 5:00 shadow, hint of a tiara) on the back of a possibly winged, and clearly friendly, lion with perfectly defined eyes and muzzle.

However, one click larger…

The lion is still there, but the princess has become a slightly crazed warrior-type.

One click bigger, and…

The lion has now become a rather handsome native in war paint and full regalia. The crazed warrior is still a crazed warrior (sneaking up on the rather handsome native and about to ruin his day). (No worries, the rather handsome native always wins.)

And, big…

It’s pretty much a bunch of leaves.

It’s a fascinating world, isn’t it?

Treasure Hunt!

event, Halloween, hotel, installation, The Mirror Project, Troutdale

The focal point (other than food and drink and smiles and such) of The Halloween Hanging at the hotel, is the treasure hunt.  Promised to you last week was a preview, so take this clue…

… and tell me which of these Mirrors it’s from.
[Hint:  the focus is on the hidden things in the middles.]

Now see there?  Pure fun.

There will be 38 Mirrors hanging… choose your cards (5 for kids, 10 for grups) and you’re off to match them up for fame and fortune and a warm fuzzy feeling.

See you Wednesday evening!
